I first saw Bruce perform in Peterborough, Ont. in 1970 and probably 15 to 20 times over the years. This was the 3rd time seeing him here in LA
Bruce closed the show after sunset as a very cool and damp breeze overtook the Santa Monica Pier. He came onstage wearing an overcoat that remainded necessary for the whole show. Perhaps the weather threw him off a bit. It had been a lovely and sunny day for Eliza Gilkyson, Jimmy Lafave and Richard Thompson. The wind and chill came up during Natalie McMaster's set and worsened after dark.
Bruce had false starts on a few verses in the wrong sequence in two numbers and remarked on it during and after the songs. He also conceded that his voice wasn't at full value. However by the final three songs, and with the hardiest crowd members hanging on, Bruce was on target and closed with an even slinkier slow blues take on Barrelhouse than is usual.
