At once a terrific and disappointing show. Terrific because Bruce was sounding great, playing well and the acoustics of the venue worked superbly, disappointing because Bruce had to call a halt at 10:15 citing a curfew at the venue.
The Project's David Newton adds:
The support act Joe Craven is an entertaining mandolin player I'd not seen before, and played a few tracks off his cross-cultural Django Latino album. He was joined by a tenor banjo player from a Celtic Salsa band also playing at the festival, and members of The Ducks. A welcome new experience for me.
Bruce opened by saying he was glad to be in a country where we know how to pronounce his surname! Despite it being the first night of this leg of his tour, Bruce was in fine form and delivered a cut-down version of the set he was playing last year, with Rouler Sa Bosse an added treasure with vocalised clarinet solo. Highlights for me were a tremendous Beautiful Creatures and If A Tree Falls, which must be the first Cockburn song I ever heard.
